@Scobleizer Well, technically they are- they get all of T-Mobile's cell tower capacity that isn't being used.

@Scobleizer dont think iphone coming to verizon forcing ATT buy tMobile. I am sure it took years to close this deal

@Scobleizer Yes!!!!! Big farts think acquisitions are shortcut answer to all things. (Almost) never are!!!

  • mikeneumann - Twitter mikeneumann  1,902  March 20, 2011  Reply

@Scobleizer Because improving its network wouldn't increase revenue, silly. It's all about revenue.

  • calebelston - Twitter calebelston  1,315  March 20, 2011  Reply

@Scobleizer a big challenge is getting the permits to build the towers. Buying preexisting towers is a clever hack.

  • BrendelConsult - Twitter BrendelConsult  132  March 20, 2011  Reply

@Scobleizer Because spending that much to upgrade the network still doesn't give them all the T-Mobile subscribers they are getting now?

  • teq3 - Twitter teq3  59  March 20, 2011  Reply

@Scobleizer because that would not bolster the share price. I think this deal is for the investors.

@Scobleizer existing towers is a huge thing plus tmobile owns spectrum that they can use. Win win and just regulatory approval in the way

Good point RT @Scobleizer This is a forced marriage due to Verizon getting the iPhone. Why didn't AT&T spend $39 billion on its network?

  • TechWraith - Twitter TechWraith  1,061  March 20, 2011  Reply

@Scobleizer because it's cheaper to buy someone out. $39B wouldn't have bought them much network.

  • Smartalyx - Twitter Smartalyx  733  March 20, 2011  Reply

@Scobleizer Because AT&T buying T-Mobile is about killing competition-- not building or adding anything.

  • mikeswimm - Twitter mikeswimm  91  March 20, 2011  Reply

@Scobleizer I've read it takes forever to build out networks with regulation and such. Maybe buying is just way faster?

  • markusreimer - Twitter markusreimer  20  March 20, 2011  Reply

@Scobleizer Can't T-mobile's net be integrated with AT&T? A new country-wide rollout isn't quick. T's stuff is installed and has all permits

  • sardire - Twitter sardire  394  March 20, 2011  Reply

@Scobleizer so if ATT + T Mobile goes Verizon will likely acquire Sprint ( CDMA unification ) and we'll have 2 wireless carriers in America

  • chartier - Twitter chartier  5,025  March 20, 2011  Reply

@Scobleizer AT&T didn't sit on its thumbs through all this growth. It spent ~$40 billion on its network over the past 4 years.

    • Scobleizer - Twitter Scobleizer  170,245  March 20, 2011  Reply

@chartier and AT&T STILL sucks in SF area, amongst others. Demonstratably so.

      • chartier - Twitter chartier  5,026  March 20, 2011  Reply

@Scobleizer Talk to the city and the hippies in SF about that. Do you have any idea how hard it is to get cell towers up there?

        • Scobleizer - Twitter Scobleizer  170,249  March 20, 2011  Reply

@chartier Most of the bad stuff I have with AT&T isn't in SF. Come drive around Silicon Valley with me. Excuses. Verizon doesn't have them.

          • chartier - Twitter chartier  5,027  March 20, 2011  Reply

@Scobleizer Verizon has also never had a phone that people stand in lines for.

            • Scobleizer - Twitter Scobleizer  170,250  March 20, 2011  Reply

@chartier that's because my AT&T iPhone took 45 minutes to activate in store. My Verizon? 1. Seriously.

@Scobleizer @chartier of course, Verizon also had the benefit of a reworked network stack in the iOS, which alleviated network problems...

@Scobleizer isn't this because, as I think you've pointed out in past, of the extremely strict RF tower regulations in CA? @chartier

                • Scobleizer - Twitter Scobleizer  170,250  March 20, 2011  Reply

@turkchgo @chartier that's only an excuse in SF, not elsewhere. Verizon has a superior network even in San Jose.

  • Cisco_Mobile - Twitter Cisco_Mobile  5,289  March 20, 2011  Reply

@Scobleizer ATT is probably more concerned about the competition Sprint would bring with TMobile than the effects of the Verizon iPhone.

  • cluteman - Twitter cluteman  229  March 20, 2011  Reply

@Scobleizer slow gov't approval of new cell towers in SF/NYC means acquiring T-Mobile may be fastest way to boost AT&T network.

  • evilneuro - Twitter evilneuro  335  March 20, 2011  Reply

@Scobleizer because it would take them several years to build out the network, acquisition speeds that up, cf T-Mob + Orange in the UK
