@Pogue "how the heck do they do the CGI when the camcorder is handheld and moving!?" Really good 3D tracking. Cool work.

@Pogue compositing. software like Adobe After Effects or Apple's Shake to interpose both CGI and real life recording

@Pogue Kind of brings into doubt the authenticity of ANY video nowadays, doesn't it? Did the riots in Iran really happen? Or were they GG?

@Pogue I suspect it's stop-action animation of actual objects, not CGI... you can see it kind of swaying on invisible strings at one point

@Pogue It's super cool... but there's a program of alga rhythms that will give the camera the feel of being hand-held. Great application!

  • obreidenbach - Twitter obreidenbach  June 28, 2009  Log in to Reply

@Pogue normally you would use a reference object that allows you to track camera movement and which is removed from the final clip.

  • MarcusLindemann - Twitter MarcusLindemann  June 28, 2009  Log in to Reply

@Pogue Maybe they did the camera movements afterwards?! ie fixed camera for the cgi and then the handheld style... #frpostvideo

  • jakubfoglar - Twitter jakubfoglar  June 28, 2009  Log in to Reply

@Pogue Just as they would do in Transformers. Track the camera then add the CG elements.

@Pogue you just record the movement of the camera with something like an accelerometer and use this data for the virtual camera.

@Pogue Consumer-grade 3d tracking tools like PFHoe (http://www.pfhoe.com/hoe.htm) have gotten really good in the last few years.

@Pogue A wee bit late on that one, David. Regardless, the video is awesome. The CGI is great too! Almost unreal... maybe it was real...!

@Pogue I would use tracking software and add camera shake. Shake was too smooth to be real.

  • cpedraza - Twitter cpedraza  June 28, 2009  Log in to Reply

@Pogue Motion-tracking software uses contrast to ID fixed points &follow them as they move frame by frame. It overlays & moves CGI to match.

  • ajbezark - Twitter ajbezark  June 28, 2009  Log in to Reply

@Pogue CGI Motion Tracking has advanced wildly in recent years. It's now possible to track any shot by just identifying a few stable points.

@Pogue very old trick, you film the scenery as-is and superimpose the CGI in post-processing (including the shadows) - very well done video

  • dcalef - Twitter dcalef  June 28, 2009  Log in to Reply

@Pogue CGI down by "tracking" software that locks on points then tracks the CGI masks movements to correspond. Did you see shawdow detail?

@Pogue frame by frame tracking will do that, probably an easy spot (color) on the desk when it was shot, voila!

@Pogue They are likely tracking the plane of the desk then compositing the CGI. Neat stuff. Check out "augmented reality" in general.
