ocean feed A new cafe called "The Little Pantry" has opened in Shenton Park. Obviously my duty to check it out. Uses Ponchione coffee from Italy?

@ocean stale coffee? but cute name.. let me know what you think of it
@beyondbeeton @d_wolff I know, am very sceptical of non-local coffee too. Apparently Ponchione is "official coffee of Slow Food movement"?
@ocean i don't get the point of an "official" anything for slow food movement. products mass produced overseas for export can only be bad
@beyondbeeton I shall question/berate then next time I am in there. Didn't want to get off to a bad start
Owner seemed nice.
@ocean @beyondbeeton There is the presidia which protects certain foods. Or maybe Ponchione support them in Italty, but definitely not here.
@ocean a) Anything not roasted in Oz = eww. B) WTF is slow food movement and why do they have an official coffee?
@ocean my initial research indicates ponchione is from the home of asti spumante. So i guess it is the best local beverage option
@beyondbeeton @ocean I can't speak for internationally, but as far as i know there is no "official" anything of Slow Food. Not here anyway.
@ocean Ponchione? Never heard of it...
@ocean I'm Italian and precisely from Asti where the Slow Food movement origines. For the past 5 years I worked for Segafredo and said so I totally understand what you guys are saying about mass produced coffee. That is exactly why I chose Ponchione, which is a small, family run, roaster. I've known them for over 30 years and they specially roast the coffee for us the same day FedEx picks it up.
@ocean Yes that is right!! we air freight it, it cost us a fortune but we are serious about it, and we want our beans to be always fresh. That is the only way I can be sure if my coffee taste bad is because I made it bad. if you allow me I would like to discuss a couple of the comments I read here.
@ocean OZ coffee roasting-- the biggest problem with locally roasted coffee is consistency, sometimes you have a great cup of coffee, some other is barely drinkable. that is because most of the company are under equipped and with a lack of experience, and trust me, I tried them all. Some eastern states companies are excellent roasters (Allpress,Campos, Tobys) but sometimes not very reasonable requiring customers.....
@ocean ... to use their equipment. Which makes it prohibitive for some people. To give you an idea of where Ponchione stands, you may all know Illy coffee, for many years recognised as one of the best roasters in the world. Illy publish a magazine "Gambero Rosso" about all the best produce in the world. In its guide for 2009 Ponchione is the only coffee with 5 stars, same as their coffee.
@ocean Slow Food-- of course "slow food" Australia won't know or recognize Ponchione, it is not a local product, and that is what slow food is all about. But where the movement started, a famous restaurant near my home, Ponchione is recognised as the best coffee. Again Ponchione does not roast his coffee for export, there are just 3 ppl around the world that can have it and just because of personal friendship.
@TheLittlePantry how big is the little pantry (seating capacity)
One last thing you should consider, "unfortunately" we live in a country that doesn't allow any "green" produce to enter without a nice spray of pesticide, the green beans are not excluded, and that is another reason why I chose a foreign roaster. Already roasted coffee doesn't get sprayed but just x-rayed, I don't know you guys, but I prefer not to drink pesticides for breakfast.
I do apologise if I sort of spammed this blog, but I am very passionate about what I'm doing and I would love to have you down @ the Pantry for a coffee, on me of course, and discuss anything you wish to add to the topic. I wish you all a great night. The Little Pantry
